Welcome to CS @ Union

We have computers on our desks and in our laps, and use them for messages, music downloads, games, research, writing, and lots more. Computers affect our lives in many other ways. They model rivers to reduce pollution; they route your cell phone calls; they control the space shuttle, commercial airliners, and your car; they communicate when you get money from an ATM. Internet providers have immense "farms" of powerful computers, and there are tiny computers embedded in your home appliances. The solutions to major problems facing our society, such as climate issues, the efficient use of energy resources, health care delivery, and the development of new cures and treatments, will depend heavily on computing. Solving such problems combines sophisticated uses of computing with fields such as biology, cognitive studies, economics, earth science, environmental studies, and medicine.

Our Computer Science program prepares students for a range of future opportunities:

  • work in pure CS, building the infrastructure that supports computing efforts
  • work that combines CS with other fields in order to better tackle problems that fall at the intersection of disciplines

Students can major or minor in CS, or pursue an interdepartmental (ID) major that combines CS with another field. Currently the students pursuing ID majors are also working in art, music, philosophy, psychology, math, economics, and biology. Students can also take CS courses while pursuing digital art, neuroscience, and bioinformatics.

Overview of our curriculum:

  • a choice of five introductory courses (media computation, robotics, artificial intelligence, game development, computational science)
  • a set of core courses in algorithms, computer architecture, and software design that provide a strong foundation for the major or minor
  • mid-level and upper-level electives based on current developments in the field, such as web programming, game development, robotics, parallel computing, user interfaces, bioinformatics, natural language processing

Our students graduate with a strong knowledge base and experience that they can apply in today's computing world.

We welcome your interest in CS@Union. Please contact us if you are coming to campus for a visit or if you would like more information about our program. The department faculty work closely with students in class, as advisors, and on senior research projects. In addition, many of our students have the opportunity to work on faculty research projects during summers and the school year. We look forward to showing you our facilities and talking with you about programs of study you can pursue at Union College.
